5-year-old child's drawing used as basis for a textile print for a dress

Those of us who love children are frequently the recipients of artwork made especially for us. My nieces, ages five and three, love to draw with markers. Children see the world without the warp that culture and training places upon us as we mature, making children's artwork uniquely creative. The first evening gown pictured features a textile design with a tiled repeat of the five-year-old's artwork.

While browsing through a Dead Sea Scrolls exhibit at Southwestern Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas USA, in 2012, I saw an array of cosmetics tools on display from around the 2nd century BC and was impressed by how these items reveal the long history of cosmetics use. The worldwide cosmetics industry in the 21st century AD is vast, but records of cosmetics usage exist from the earliest excavations thousands of years ago.

Evening update: I just watched Mitt Romney's concession speech given around midnight on Tuesday, November 6, 2012. His wife Ann looked beautiful in a red dress and upswept hair, shown here from PBS Newshour. The popular vote was close. America is a great nation to allow peaceful elections and transfers of power, and we should never lose hope, cease to pray or give up working for change. From Romney's speech, "I believe in America. I believe in the people of America [long applause], and I ran for office because I'm concerned about America. This election is over, but our principles endure. I believe that the principles upon which this nation was founded are the only sure guide to a resurgent economy and a new greatness. . . . I so wish that I had been able to fulfill your hopes to lead the country in a different direction, but the nation chose another leader, and so Ann and I join with you to earnestly pray for him and for this great nation."
