Mainstream fashion favors modesty on occasion, and the one-piece swimsuit styles enjoying the current spotlight this season fill that description. The trend began, as trends often do, with celebrities who were photographed in various styles of one-piece swimwear. Designers responded by increasing the number of one-pieces they sent down the runway for Spring/Summer 2013 collections. The trend is anticipated to continue for several more years, as it did the last time one-pieces enjoyed a resurgence in the late 1990s.
Publications such as NY Mag reference interviews with retailers who are reporting that sales of one-piece swimsuits that "hide flaws" are surging. Colleen Sherin, senior fashion director at Saks Fifth Avenue, was quoted by Yahoo Shine, "Designers are getting more innovative in one-piece design. . . . There are five bikinis and four one-pieces," referring to Sak's 2013 Spring Preview catalog that was previously dominated by bikinis. New York Post quotes swimwear designer Jeremy Scott, “It’s far more exciting to design a maillot than a bikini. I love the challenge in covering up more.” New York Post also interviewed Cindy Hahn, the owner of Azaleas swimwear and lingerie boutique in Manhattan, who said, "We are definitely seeing a resurgence of one-pieces . . . We've ordered about 20 percent more in one-pieces versus last year."
Women who dress modestly enjoy fitting in with mainstream fashion whenever possible, if nothing else just for the fun of it. Searching will still be required among the new one-piece swimsuit fashions to find those that are more modest than others. High-cut necklines and skirts on swimsuits add a nice touch of modesty. Many of our readers prefer more coverage than this while swimming. A full range of modest swimwear options is reviewed in our Modest Swimsuits category. The options are extensive if you are willing to order a swimsuit online, so begin now to look for your perfect suit that will arrive in time for this season's swimming.
